from Leonard's Flat (2018)

Cockerels

I was told this is
the one that
hung in
your last room your last
link to a

life’s work.
A world of cockerels
held up as helpless
and proud.
I was told your waning

good days were few
filled by silences
the distance
of a clothesline
with peg-winged

dresses dancing
for the sun.
This is a window
to happiness
where you

and I exist
on either side
of the imaginary
glass the flat
dimension

known as Cockerel’s Law.
For every likeness
lost in a grey labyrinth
there is another
to be found

within vibrant borders.
